Jasmyn

Jasmyn is the new solo project created by Jasmyn Burke, former singer-songwriter and frontwoman of the critically acclaimed band Weaves. Having received two Polaris Music Prize shortlists, two JUNO nominations for Alternative Album of the Year and two SOCAN Songwriting Prize nominations, Burke has established herself as one of Canada’s most exciting and fresh voices.

With this new project, she has decided to use her own name, Jasmyn, to mark the start of exploring her own unique sound as a solo artist. She signed the project to ANTI- Records (sister label to Epitaph Records) and to Royal Mountain Records for Canada.

Having left hometown Toronto in search of a slower pace and some room to breathe, Jasmyn found herself slowly picking her guitar back up and writing songs in her living room using Garageband on her phone. Signed to ANTI- but unable to travel, she began sending demos to Los Angeles-based Producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten) who collaborated with her remotely on a body of work she had compiled over months of being in lockdown. In the Spring of 2021, Jasmyn went to LA to record with Congleton, exploring themes of finding patterns in life and how to perhaps change them. These themes are front and center on her first single “Find the Light.”

On the general direction of the new project, and the meaning behind the debut song, Jasmyn said, “This song was loosely written during the Fall of 2020. The world was feeling pretty heavy, and I felt myself wanting to write music that created a mood of happiness and space to grow.” She reflects: “It feels like we’re living in this sort of in-between space, where life is altering. I wanted to explore finding comfort and hopefulness through uncomfortable change. I feel like I have grown and changed as a person over the last few years and wanted to write songs that created a sense of confidence and well-being.”

With Weaves receiving worldwide support from the likes of Rolling Stone Magazine, NPR, Pitchfork, Elton’s John’s Rocket Hour, The Guardian and Glastonbury Festival, Jasmyn is excited to share a new side of herself, perhaps her most honest and raw work to date. “Find the Light” is the first glimpse into the imaginative and singular voice of Jasmyn.
